How to Take a Full Page Screenshot in Chrome (Without Repeating Headers)

Capture an entire web page in Chrome as one clean image, with sticky headers shown once, lazy-loaded images filled in, and notes added before you share it.

You need the whole page, not just the part on your screen. A bug that only shows up near the footer. A competitor’s pricing page before it changes. An order confirmation, a long article, a design to review. A normal screenshot only captures what’s visible, and stitching several together by hand is slow and never quite lines up.

Full page screenshot tools solve that, but many of them create new problems: the site’s menu bar repeated every screenful down the image, a cookie banner stamped across the middle, or blank boxes where images hadn’t loaded yet.

This guide covers how to take a full page screenshot in Chrome with the tool already built into the browser, and with our free Chrome extension Seamless, which was built to avoid those problems.

The short answer: to take a full page screenshot in Chrome, install a full page screenshot extension such as Seamless and press Alt+Shift+P. To do it without an extension, open Chrome’s DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac), type “screenshot” and choose Capture full size screenshot. Seamless also shows sticky headers once, waits for lazy-loaded images, lets you annotate the capture, and keeps everything on your computer.

How to take a full page screenshot in Chrome with Seamless

  1. Install Seamless from the Chrome Web Store, and pin it to the toolbar so it’s one click away.
  2. Open the page you want to capture.
  3. Start a full page capture. Click the Seamless icon and choose full page, press Alt+Shift+P, or right-click the page and use the Seamless menu.
  4. Let it finish. Seamless scrolls through the page, waits for images to load, and stitches the shots into one image. If you switch tabs, it pauses instead of capturing the wrong page, then picks up where it stopped. Your scroll position is restored at the end.
  5. Annotate if you need to. The capture opens in the built-in editor, where you can add arrows, boxes, text and highlights, or crop it.
  6. Export. Save it as a full-size PNG for free. With Premium, you can also export a PDF, JPEG or WebP.

You can check or change any Seamless keyboard shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Other ways to capture with Seamless

Full page isn’t always what you need. Seamless has five capture modes:

Mode Shortcut Use it for
Full page Alt+Shift+P The entire page, top to bottom, as one image
Visible area Alt+Shift+V Exactly what’s on your screen right now
Selected area Alt+Shift+R A rectangle you drag, fine-tuned with the arrow keys
Element Hover to pick One part of the page, such as a card, a table or a chart
Scrolling panel Premium A box that scrolls inside the page, such as a sidebar, chat or feed

There’s also a five-second delay, for capturing a dropdown menu or a hover state that disappears when you click.

Why full page screenshots go wrong, and how Seamless handles it

Most web pages aren’t built to be photographed top to bottom. These are the problems that cause messy captures:

Problem What you usually get What Seamless does
Sticky headers The menu bar repeated every screenful Shows it once, where you saw it
Cookie banners, chat bubbles The same banner stamped down the page Shows each overlay once
Lazy-loaded images Blank boxes where images hadn’t loaded Waits for images to load before capturing
Very tall pages The capture split into several files Keeps the page as one file
Pages that move while scrolling Misaligned joins between sections Checks each overlap and warns you if the page moved
Feeds that rebuild as you scroll A stitched image that isn’t what was on screen Tells you the page can’t be captured completely, rather than handing you a misleading image

How to take a full page screenshot in Chrome without an extension

Chrome has a full page screenshot tool hidden in its developer tools. It’s free, already installed, and fine for the occasional capture:

  1. Open the page and scroll to the bottom once, so images further down have a chance to load.
  2. Open DevTools: press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or a Chromebook (F12 also works on Windows), or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac.
  3. Open the command menu: press Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac.
  4. Type screenshot and choose Capture full size screenshot.
  5. Chrome saves the image as a PNG in your downloads.

It works well on simple pages. It isn’t designed for everyday use, though: there’s no editor or library, images that hadn’t loaded can come out blank, and it captures the main page only, so content that scrolls inside a panel shows just one screen’s worth.

How to save a full web page as a PDF

If you need the page as a PDF rather than an image, you have two options:

  • Chrome’s print to PDF. Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), set the destination to Save as PDF, and save. It’s free and built in, but it uses the page’s print layout, which often looks different from the screen. Menus can disappear, columns can reflow, and backgrounds are left out unless you turn on Background graphics under More settings.
  • Seamless PDF export (Premium). Seamless saves the page as it looked on your screen, either split across pages with smart page breaks or as one continuous page. Use this when the PDF needs to match what you actually saw, for example as a record of a listing, a price or a published page.

Annotate and redact before you share

A screenshot usually needs a note before it goes to a developer, a designer or a client. The Seamless editor opens straight after each capture.

  • Free: arrows, boxes, ellipses, lines, text, a highlighter and crop. Press A for an arrow, R for a box, T for text and C to crop.
  • Premium: numbered step markers that renumber themselves when you delete one, plus redaction, blur and pixelate for hiding names, emails, account numbers and other private details.

Annotations are saved separately from the screenshot, so you can go back and edit them later without starting over.

Scrolling screenshots on Windows, Mac and Chromebook

Seamless runs inside Chrome, so it works the same way wherever you use desktop Chrome: on a Windows PC or laptop, on a Mac, or on a Chromebook. The same shortcut takes the same full page screenshot on all of them. On a Mac, the Alt key is the Option key.

It’s a browser extension, not a phone app. It captures web pages open in Chrome, not other apps on your computer.

How to choose a full page screenshot extension

There are several popular full page screenshot extensions for Chrome, including GoFullPage, Awesome Screenshot and FireShot. If you’re comparing them, test each one on the pages that usually go wrong, and check a few things beyond the capture itself:

  • Sticky headers and banners: do they appear once, or repeat down the image?
  • Long pages: do you get one file, or several pieces?
  • Lazy-loaded images: are they filled in, or blank?
  • Where captures go: do they stay on your computer, or are they uploaded to the developer’s servers?
  • Account and watermark: do you need to sign up, and do free exports carry a watermark?
  • Export formats: can you get PNG, JPEG and PDF when you need them?

For Seamless, the answers are: once, one file, filled in, on your computer, no account, no watermark, and PNG free with JPEG, WebP and PDF in Premium.

Your screenshots stay on your computer

Seamless captures, stitches, annotates and stores everything on your computer. Screenshots, page content, page addresses and your browsing history aren’t uploaded as part of capture work, and there’s no analytics, tracking or crash reporting in the extension.

Captures are kept in a local library inside Chrome, where you can search by page title or address, filter by site, sort by date, size or page height, and pin the ones you want to keep. A scheduled tidy-up clears old captures and skips anything you’ve pinned. Because the library lives in Chrome, clearing your browsing data deletes it too, so export anything you need to keep.

Seamless asks for broader site access only when it needs to capture an embedded frame it otherwise couldn’t reach, and it explains why first. Capture features work offline. We explain how this approach varies across our apps in What “privacy-first” means across the BoMoSi portfolio.

Free and Premium

Seamless is free to install. The free version includes:

  • full page, visible area, selected area and element capture
  • the five-second delay and right-click menu
  • the editor’s arrows, boxes, ellipses, lines, text, highlighter and crop
  • unlimited full-size PNG export, never watermarked
  • the local capture library

There’s no account to create and no trial countdown.

Seamless Premium adds:

  • scrolling panel capture for sidebars, chats and embedded readers
  • step markers, redaction, blur and pixelate
  • PDF export with smart page breaks, or as one continuous page
  • JPEG and WebP with a quality slider
  • output at 100%, 50% or 25% size
  • saving straight to your downloads folder

Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription, and the current price is shown in the extension. Checkout runs through BoMoPay, powered by Stripe, so your card details never reach the extension. You can cancel from Seamless settings in one click. Buying or restoring Premium needs an internet connection.

FAQ

What is the best way to take a full page screenshot in Chrome?

For regular use, a full page screenshot extension is the easiest way. Seamless captures the whole page with one shortcut (Alt+Shift+P), shows sticky headers once, waits for lazy-loaded images, and opens an editor for notes before you share. For an occasional capture, Chrome’s own DevTools has a Capture full size screenshot command.

Can Chrome take a full page screenshot without an extension?

Yes. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I (Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac), type “screenshot” and choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves a PNG to your downloads. It has no editor, and images that hadn’t loaded can come out blank, so scroll through the page first.

How do I save an entire web page as a PDF?

Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) in Chrome and choose Save as PDF. That uses the page’s print layout, which can look different from the screen. To get a PDF that matches what you saw, Seamless Premium exports the captured page as a PDF with smart page breaks, or as one continuous page.

Why does my full page screenshot repeat the header?

Many sites have a sticky header that stays at the top of the screen as you scroll. When a tool captures the page one screen at a time and joins the shots, the header ends up in every shot. Seamless detects sticky headers and overlays and shows them only once.

Why are images missing from my full page screenshot?

Many pages only load images as you scroll down to them. If the capture runs before they’ve loaded, they come out blank. Seamless waits for lazy-loaded images before capturing. With other tools, scroll to the bottom of the page first.

How do I take a scrolling screenshot on a Chromebook, Mac or Windows PC?

For a web page, install Seamless in Chrome and press Alt+Shift+P. It works the same on a Chromebook, a Mac and a Windows PC, because it runs inside desktop Chrome.

Does Seamless upload my screenshots?

No. Capturing, stitching, annotating and storing all happen on your computer. Screenshots aren’t uploaded, and the extension has no analytics or tracking.

Is Seamless free, and does it add a watermark?

Seamless is free to install, and free exports are full-size PNGs with no watermark and no limit. Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription that adds scrolling panel capture, redaction and blur, PDF, JPEG and WebP export, and direct downloads.

Does Seamless work in Firefox, Edge or on my phone?

Seamless is a Chrome extension, installed from the Chrome Web Store. It isn’t a phone app. Firefox has its own full page option: right-click the page, choose Take Screenshot, then Save full page. In Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S to open Web capture and choose Capture full page.
