Scrolling Screenshot in Chrome: Capture a Long Page, Chat or Sidebar

How to take a scrolling screenshot in Chrome: long pages as one image, plus chats and sidebars that scroll inside the page. Shortcuts for Windows, Mac and Chromebook.

“Scrolling screenshot” can mean two different things, and the right method depends on which one you need. Sometimes you want a whole long web page as one image. Other times the content you want is inside a box on the page that has its own scrollbar, such as a chat window, a sidebar or a feed. A normal screenshot captures neither, because it only records what is on your screen right now.

This guide explains both cases, which Chrome and operating-system shortcuts to use, and where each method stops. It uses our free Chrome extension Seamless for the scrolling captures. For the step-by-step full page method, including Chrome’s built-in tool, see our guide to taking a full page screenshot in Chrome.

The short answer: to take a scrolling screenshot of a long page in Chrome, install Seamless and press Alt+Shift+P. To capture a chat, sidebar or feed that scrolls inside the page, use Seamless’s Scrolling panel mode (a Premium feature), then click the panel. Keyboard screenshot shortcuts built into Windows, Mac and Chromebook capture only what is visible, so they can’t scroll for you.

Which kind of scrolling screenshot do you need?

  • A long article, listing or receipt (the whole page scrolls): use full page capture, Alt+Shift+P in Seamless.
  • A chat, sidebar, feed or embedded reader (a box inside the page scrolls): use scrolling panel capture, a Seamless Premium feature.
  • Just what you can see: use visible area capture, or your computer’s own screenshot shortcut.

A quick test: scroll with your mouse wheel over the content you want. If the whole page moves, it’s a long page. If only a box moves while the page stays still, it’s a scrolling panel.

Scrolling screenshot of a long page

  1. Install Seamless from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to your toolbar.
  2. Open the page you want to capture.
  3. Press Alt+Shift+P (Option+Shift+P on a Mac), or click the Seamless icon and choose full page.
  4. Wait for it to finish. Seamless scrolls down the page, waits for images to load, and joins the pieces into one image. Sticky headers and banners appear once instead of repeating, and the long page stays as a single file.
  5. Add notes if you need them, then export. PNG export is free, full size and without a watermark.

If you switch to another tab while it’s capturing, Seamless pauses instead of capturing the wrong page.

Scrolling screenshot of a chat, sidebar or feed

Content inside a panel with its own scrollbar is often missed even by full page tools, because the page itself isn’t what’s scrolling. Seamless has a separate Scrolling panel mode for this. It is part of Seamless Premium.

  1. Open the page that contains the panel.
  2. Click the Seamless icon and choose Scrolling panel, described in the extension as “all of a box that scrolls on its own”.
  3. Seamless marks the scrolling panels it finds on the page. Click the one you want, or press Tab to move between them. Press Esc to cancel.
  4. Seamless scrolls that panel from top to bottom and returns one image.

If the page has no scrolling panels, Seamless tells you instead of capturing something else.

Chrome and computer screenshot shortcuts

These are the shortcuts you’re most likely to need. Only the full page options scroll:

  • Alt+Shift+P (Seamless): full page, top to bottom. Scrolls.
  • Alt+Shift+V (Seamless): the visible area. Doesn’t scroll.
  • Alt+Shift+R (Seamless): a rectangle you select. Doesn’t scroll.
  • Windows key+Shift+S (Windows): opens the snipping tool to select an area. Doesn’t scroll.
  • Shift+Command+4 (Mac): select an area of the screen. Doesn’t scroll.
  • Shift+Command+5 (Mac): opens the screenshot toolbar. Doesn’t scroll.
  • Shift+Ctrl+Show windows (Chromebook): opens screen capture. Doesn’t scroll.
  • Chrome DevTools: press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac), type “screenshot” and choose Capture full size screenshot. It captures the main page only.

You can check or change any Seamless shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. On a Mac, the Alt key in the Seamless shortcuts is the Option key.

When a scrolling capture can’t be complete

Some pages rebuild themselves as you scroll, replacing the content that has gone off screen with new content. Stitching those into one image can leave gaps or repeats. Seamless detects these cases and reports that the capture can’t be completed, instead of giving you a misleading image. If that happens, capture the part you need with visible area or selected area instead.

Your captures stay on your computer

Seamless captures, stitches, annotates and stores everything on your computer. Screenshots, page content, addresses and browsing history are not uploaded for capture work, and the extension has no analytics or tracking. Captures are saved in a local library inside Chrome, so clearing your browsing data deletes them. Export anything you want to keep.

Free and Premium

Seamless is free to install. The free version includes full page, visible area, selected area and element capture, the basic editor, the local library and unlimited full-size PNG export without a watermark. No account is needed.

Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription. It adds scrolling panel capture, redaction, blur and pixelate, step markers, PDF, JPEG and WebP export, output size control and saving directly to your downloads folder. You can cancel from Seamless settings.

FAQ

How do I take a scrolling screenshot in Chrome?

For a long page, install Seamless and press Alt+Shift+P. It scrolls the page, waits for images to load and returns one image. Chrome also has a built-in option in DevTools: press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac), type “screenshot” and choose Capture full size screenshot.

How do I screenshot a chat window or sidebar that scrolls?

Use a tool that can capture a scrolling panel. In Seamless, choose Scrolling panel, then click the panel you want. This mode is part of Seamless Premium.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for a scrolling screenshot in Chrome?

Seamless uses Alt+Shift+P for a full page capture. The screenshot shortcuts built into Windows, Mac and Chromebook capture only what is on screen and don’t scroll.

Why is my long screenshot cut off or repeated?

Pages that rebuild their content as you scroll, or that keep a header fixed on screen, can confuse tools that join several screenshots. Seamless shows sticky headers once and reports pages it can’t capture completely.

Does a scrolling screenshot work on a Chromebook or Mac?

Yes. Seamless runs inside desktop Chrome, so the same shortcut works on Windows, Mac and Chromebook. It is a Chrome extension, not a phone app.

Does Seamless upload my screenshots?

No. Capture, stitching, editing and storage all happen on your computer.

Seamless is a Chrome extension installed from the Chrome Web Store. Some dynamically rebuilt pages cannot be captured completely, and Seamless reports those cases. Premium features need a subscription, and buying or restoring Premium needs an internet connection.
